Primary 1
In Primary 1, pupils follow the Developmental Pathways Curriculum, which emphasises fun, engaging, and hands-on learning experiences both indoors and outdoors in a developmentally appropriate way. Learning environments are carefully adapted to meet the individual needs of each child. Every class benefits from access to outdoor areas, our onsite Hydrotherapy Pool, and local facilities, including the ICC’s Sensory Room and Forest School.
We take a multidisciplinary approach, working closely with professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dietitians, Community Nurses, and more to ensure all pupils have full access to the curriculum. We also use Attention Autism strategies to support engagement and introduce new topics and skills.
The focus of Primary 1’s Curriculum:
- Personalised Learning
To provide a curriculum that meets learners at their individual developmental level, allowing for meaningful progress across all areas of learning. - Holistic Development
To support the whole child—cognitively, emotionally, socially, physically, and communicatively—through a broad and balanced range of experiences. - Engagement and Well-being
To increase learner engagement, enjoyment, and emotional well-being by creating motivating, relevant, and hands-on learning opportunities. - Communication and Interaction
To develop effective communication in the learner’s preferred mode (e.g. verbal, signs, symbols/PECs, AAC) to support interaction, choice-making, and self-expression. - Independence and Life Skills
To build independence through daily routines, functional life skills, and problem-solving, preparing learners for their next stage in life. - Inclusive Access
To ensure all learners have full access to a meaningful curriculum, supported by a multidisciplinary team of professionals (e.g. SALT, OT, Physio). - Contribution and Citizenship
To nurture a sense of belonging, community involvement, and an understanding of learners' roles in society and the wider world. - Health and Physical Development
To promote physical well-being and healthy lifestyles through activities like Hydrotherapy, MOVE, and sensory integration.
